Getting in to musical theatre was one of the best things I ever did for my development as a guitarist because it develops so many skills.
The need to sight read proficiently, the ability to adapt to situations as they unravel, and play an almost unrivalled number of genres convincingly whilst maintaining the director’s vision makes this one of the most demanding things I think a guitarist can be involved with. Not to mention we’re often contorted into spaces that always seem to get smaller from show to show!
I find this playing very exciting – especially when having to read two guitar parts and play additional instruments like banjo etc – and I now have a great deal of experience in this area, and continue to aspire to playing more shows, in more places.
